NaNoWriMo Day 3, and other things

03 Nov

Three days into National Novel Writing Month and I’m at 5,000 words and counting. Last night I attended my region’s kickoff party, and had a total blast. It’s so nice to meet people my own age who are just as crazy as I am about things like Doctor Who, tea, Alton Brown, and (of course) books. (Just to name a few things) I can’t wait for the NaNo forums to start working properly again so we can get some Write-Ins organized and I can go out and have a proper social life…with nerds. :)

Normally by now I’m being a total overachiever and trying to push 7,000 words, but to be honest I’ve been completely distracted by music and videos. Last week, my dad turned me on to a program he uses to collect videos from the Internet, and until today I hadn’t really had a chance to use it properly. But oh, those floodgates are open now. Say hi to Miro, the latest in my long list of obsessions. It’s simple, addictive, pretty, and easy to use. You can find pretty much everything and a lot of times the video quality you get in Miro is much better than on, say, YouTube, or even watching podcasts in iTunes. It’s neat, I like it.

My need for new music has also been fulfilled today. One thing sort of led to another and I just looked up and realized I’ve spent the last two hours looking for and enjoying new music. Last.fm is truly excellent for getting recommendations, though I think most of the trouble started when I saw this last night and fell in love with the background music. (“Still Alive” sung by Lisa Miskovsky) Also, I FINALLY managed to find all of the music I absolutely loved from Indigo Prophecy. Theory of a Deadman is officially one of my new favorite bands, and Martina Topley-Bird isn’t bad either. (“Need One” is very cool, and “Sandpaper Kisses” is one of those rare songs I could listen to on repeat for hours) I even found a few albums I’ve been wanting for awhile now at McKay’s, my favorite local dimensionally transcendental bookstore. My iPod is very happy now, and so am I. ^_^

As if that wasn’t enough, I also got my hands on the shiny new demo for Tomb Raider: Underworld yesterday, and my only comment is this: Fucking badass. The graphics are amazing, and I like Lara’s new muscular look. I also like the fact she collects grit and dust as she goes about her tomb raiding ways, which is a nice authentic touch. Hey, a girl’s gonna get dirty crawling around in ancient ruins, y’know? Also, I can’t express how happy I am that the story of Legend is going to be continued. I have to admit I was worried it was going to be one of those things that would be left unfinished, which would have been very upsetting since it’s not often video games have stories that actually intrigue me. But seriously. If you’ve got a system that can handle it, go get the demo right now. Check out all of Lara’s amazing new moves, the pretty scenery, and the water that is jaw droppingly gorgeous. I can’t wait to play this game!

Well, I’d better get going. There’s this funny thing called “eating” I have to do. Not really sure how, but I’m fairly sure starving to death while watching fun internet videos would be kind of unpleasant. Go figure. Have fun, kids. – A
